MapleSim Tire Library

Extend MapleSim vehicle models with high-performance pneumatic tire component models.

Overview of the MapleSim Tire Library

With the MapleSim Tire Library, engineers can extend their high-fidelity, multi-domain MapleSim vehicle models with high-performance pneumatic tire components. The MapleSim Tire Library provides MapleSim users with industry standard tire force model components such as Fiala, and Pacejka’s magic tire formula. In addition, linear tire models and user-defined tire models are available to provide flexibility for investigation and analysis. With the easy-to-use point-and-click MapleSim graphical environment, these fully parameterized force models can be integrated into existing vehicle dynamics models by simply dragging the component into the diagram and connecting it to the vehicle model.

Highlights

  • Kinematic quantities, such as slip angle, longitudinal slip, and inclination angle are derived automatically and are available to the user. These quantities are used by the various tire force models to determine tire forces and moments

  • Engineers can control how the tire slip and rolling radius are calculated, and include tire transients through differential equations involving relaxation lengths

  • The following industry standard tire models are supported: Fiala, Pacejka 2002, and Pacejka 2012. For custom research and development applications, user-defined tire models can be easily constructed using an intuitive interface

  • Manage tire parameters easily with an intuitive app for organizing and handling your tire parameters across your model

  • Test and simulate models on uneven terrains, giving you a wide range of environments to evaluate your model’s performance

Because the MapleSim Tire Library is a fully integrated add-on package to MapleSim, models incorporating these components can take full advantage of MapleSim functionality. As a result:

  • Dynamic and kinematic quantities, such as normal force and slip angle, can be plotted and analyzed easily

  • Parameter sets can be stored and loaded from files to easily test and analyze different sets of tire properties

  • Realistic tire motion can be animated by attaching a CAD image to a tire model component.

  • High-performance, high-fidelity vehicle dynamics models can be exported for use in real-time simulations. Models can be exported to C code using built-in code generation tools, and to Simulink™, LabVIEW®, and NI VeriStand™ using MapleSim connector products (available separately)

MapleSim Driveline Library

Mix the best of physical models and empirical data to maximize model fidelity, optimize your designs, and improve overall vehicle fuel-efficiency.

As automotive manufacturers strive to improve vehicle fuel efficiency, much of the focus is on the engine as the primary source of power loss in the vehicle powertrain. However, there is arguably as much loss through the transmission. Engineers are putting increasing effort into assessing exactly how much power is lost, and what can be done to reduce losses and improve overall efficiency. These investigations can be done using system-level modeling and real-time testing using hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulations.

Maplesoft has developed the MapleSim Driveline Library, a collection of components, transmission sub-assemblies, and complete powertrain examples that show the use of these components in driveline applications. Built with guidance from several transmission manufacturers, this MapleSim library allows you to mix the best of physical models and empirical data to maximize model fidelity, optimize your designs, and improve overall vehicle fuel-efficiency.

The MapleSim Driveline Library was designed with HIL simulation specifically in mind. For HIL simulations, it is critical that your models execute at real-time speeds. Too often, you are forced to simplify model details in order to achieve this performance. With MapleSim and the MapleSim Driveline Library, however, you can achieve real-time speeds for complex models where other tools would fail. MapleSim’s fast simulation code allows you to develop and test your applications using high-fidelity models, so you get better results, faster.

Highlights:

  • Covers all aspects of the powertrain, from the engine to the differential, wheels, and road loads
  • Designed specifically to allow high-fidelity models to run in real-time for HIL simulation
  • Provides “lossy” versions of many components that allow losses due to tooth meshing, bearing friction, and slip to be readily incorporated using external calculations and empirical look-up tables
  • Supports an acausal approach to model development, so you can simply connect components together without worrying about issues such as torque/speed directions and load flow
  • Allows you to easily modify pre-built components to suit your specific requirements and increase model fidelity
  • Provides building blocks so you can easily create new transmission models
