Structural analysis, development, and characterization of composite materials with Avizo Software

Quickly obtain composite materials’ properties from your images

Composite materials are making their way into many different application areas, ranging from aerospace to automotive and construction. Their properties improve stiffness and strength and allow for design of lightweight components at a reasonable cost. A composite is commonly defined as a combination of two or more distinct materials, each of which retains its own distinctive properties, to create a new material with properties that cannot be achieved by any of the components acting alone.

Thermo Scientific Avizo Software allows you to obtain structural, physical, chemical, and mechanical properties quickly and accurately. With dedicated tools to obtain fiber properties, porosity, and pore network information, Avizo Software is the digital analytic lab you need to analyze your 2D and 3D imaging data, no matter the data acquisition system you used. Qualitative and quantitative analysis of battery and energy storage materials using Avizo Software

Quickly and accurately understand and develop battery and energy storage advanced materials

The performance of advanced new materials, such as batteries, highly depends on their structure. Imaging techniques, such as electron microscopy and CT, are effective methods to capture the structure information of different battery components at multiple length scale. With such information, the next step is the use of imaging analysis software to turn the image into data for researcher to quantitatively interpret the structure–performance correlation.

At the macro level, Thermo Scientific Avizo Software can be used to assess the quality of the manufacturing process by allowing you to look into packaging, check solder points, and detect possible leakage or porosity and delamination. You can also examine the aging process, look into foil, cathode, and anode morphological changes or core leakage.

Fibrous materials

Avizo Software for Fiber Analysis

3D visualization and analysis of fibrous materials with Avizo Software.

Quickly and accurately understand your fibrous materials

Fibrous materials, such as carbon or glass fiber (CFRP, GFRP), fabric (multi-layer composites), fiber-reinforced concrete (FRC), and organic fibers are used in a wide range of applications and industries (automotive, aerospace, etc.). Imaging techniques such as microCT or SEM allow for analysis of those materials; for example, to detect manufacturing imperfections or to quantify microstructures to obtain insights on mechanical properties (strength, stiffness, etc.).

Thermo Scientific Avizo Software is an all-in-one image analysis platform that allows the visualization, processing, and quantification of fibrous materials. Avizo Software enables the detection of manufacturing process damage such as matrix cracking, fiber/matrix debonding, or fiber breakage. Imperfections in the material can be quantified locally (voids, cracks) or globally (cross-sectional distortions or misalignments). Read more

Porous materials

Avizo Software for Advanced Porous Materials

Characterization and analysis of porosity and pore structures using 3D visualization and analysis software.

Quickly and accurately understand your porous materials

Porosity is present in many materials. Whether it is a defect or a feature, its quantification is critical. For example, understanding the various types of porosity defects can inform adjustments in the manufacturing process in order to improve the material’s properties. In a material that is porous by design, the expected level of porosity can be adapted through conception changes. Imaging techniques such as microCT, FIB-SEM, SEM, and TEM allow for analysis of porous materials to quantify micro pores, sponge-type voids, large macro-voids, inclusions, and so forth.

Thermo Scientific Avizo Software is an all-in-one image analysis platform that allows for the visualization, processing, and quantification of porous materials. Avizo Software enables the detection and classification of various types of porosity (for example, connected vs isolated; macro pores vs micro pores), even on images with complex artifacts (for example, pore back effect in FIB-SEM). Many porosity properties and statistics can be calculated, such as volume fraction, largest ball fitting through a given pore, pore size distribution, pore throat size distribution, pore orientation, shape factor, and more. Porosity can be turned into a model (Pore Network Model), allowing for rapid understanding and exploration of the pore space, that features spheres or ellipsoids-and-sticks type visualization with property mapping. Avizo Software also allows the direct calculation of the absolute permeability of the material from the segmented pore space. Read more
